Artist Biography

Rebecca Ogun's passion for art began at a young age growing up in an artistic household rummaging through her grandmother’s painting supplies and watching the women in the house create fiber arts. This passion continued to grow as she was able to travel and interpret things through her artistic eyes.

Rebecca attended the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2002. As the world around her began to change due to 9/11, she decided to focus on societal issues that had a connection with this event. She graduated in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts majoring in painting with a minor in Art History In 2012, she graduated from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey with a master’s degree in fine arts. Her thesis examined the culture of family and women in Turkish daily life from a foreigner’s perspective.

From 2018 -2021, Rebecca opened an art studio in North Cyprus. She had students of all ages wanting to learn more about creating art from group lessons to private lessons. Throughout the duration of her education, Rebecca has personally joined and exhibited her artwork in several countries around the world which include USA, Turkey, and North Cyprus.

Presently, Rebecca is an FCPS high school art teacher teaching Studio Art and Design in which she helps them strengthen their artistic skills and abilities, and creativity.

Artist Statement

As an artist, I strive to bring my unique perspective to each piece I create. My passion for art has led me to explore a variety of mediums and techniques, and I am constantly pushing myself to try new things. Whether I am working on a new painting or experimenting with a new medium, I am always excited to see where my creativity will take me. Looking at my style and media use, it changes from time to time from expressing color and creating a story with abstracted images, to creating artworks that reflect a memory. My ideas come from watching my children grow and becoming more independent, world issues, and memories that bring me joy. I enjoy expressing my ideas through metaphors and creating artworks that show a story or more of an independent figure with emotions, as well as looking at world issues, and creating collages through my perspective and then turning them into paintings or drawings.

My artworks have changed over time with having the viewer decipher what the story is behind them. In my Coffee Series, my artworks are seen with painted abstract images that represent stories. Every viewer will have a different interpretation and come up with their own stories. In my recent artworks which are collages or paintings or drawings from them, the representation is more visual of what I want the viewer to notice. There are defined objects and figures that are placed in an environment that gives the viewer a sense of space and depth. If you are interested in learning more about my work or would like to commission a piece, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I am always happy to hear from fellow art enthusiasts!
